Old Deore XT seal unremoveable?

I have a Deore XT rear hub that is too old to be included in Shimano Tec Docs. The "seal" has two holes for a pin wrench and an arrow labeled "open." Spinning the seal does not open it. The accompanying front hub had the same seal and broke when I "helped" it out like most other seals. There is a groove around the shell with a corresponding lip on the seal. I have cleaned the shell and can rebuild with the seal in place but would like to find out how it is supposed to work. Have nice photo but can't get it to upload.... Thank you.

IIRC this "seal" is what most will call a dust cap. The feature you describe is one that opens or closes two tiny grease injection holes. Being a two piece cap in the space/volume of a one piece no wonder it will break easily (and after many years of drying out). Andy

Ah, Ha! Yes. The dust cap is not removable but on close inspection, it can be rotated to line up with grease passages. Thank you.
