Road bar (26.0) in a MTB stem (25.4)?

I just bought a used Cannondale road bike with a 110mm stem, and think I'd like to try something a bit shorter. I've got a 90mm MTB stem I'm not using, and would like to give it a try.

The 26.0mm bar seems to fit OK in the 25.4mm stem, but I'm wondering if I might be doing any damage to the bar (it's a 6061AL Deda). Any idea if I can get away with this for a training ride or two, just to check out the fit?

If I like the stem size, any problem running this setup on a permanent basis, or should I just bite the bullet & buy a proper road stem?

    TIA

For aluminum bars, it works fine - the stretch inherent in the aluminum stem will compensate for the difference. Don't try it with carbon bars, though.

Actually, it shouldn't be done at all. Aluminum doesn't like to be stretched. Do it right and get a bar with a 25.4 clamp.Notti makes one.
