Can my rim be too thin for my tire? Changine tire woe's

hey everyone, my new 2.5" tire just came in, a michelin hor S, anyway im trying to get it onmy stock kona hahana rims which previously held a 1.96" tire, is the rim too thin? im having a good amount of trouble ggetting the tire to fit on the rim.

BAH!

i got it on the rim and inflated, now my brakes are out of wack!!! the whole assembly was tilted to the left, and when i hit the brakes, the brake arms rubbed against my tire tread !!!!!!!!1 FARK!

im going to take pics, but this really sucks, and the normal tinking around and adjusting tension isnt working.
