ITM and 25.8

So for some reason ITM makes their bars and stems with a 25.8 mm clamp diameter. I forgot about this when I bought a stem to use with my 26 mm bar and found that they don't fit together nicely. I tried to return the stem, and the guy I talked to at the LBS said "it's made a bit smaller like that so the bar doesn't creak as much." This sounds like total bullcrap and I'm sure he made it up on the spot, but I took his word for it and kept the stem.

I poked around, searched forums, and everyone seems to think a 25.8mm stem and a 26.0mm bar will work okay. If either my bar or stem breaks and I die, I'm going to be really mad.

Does anyone know why ITM is using this size? Is it really safe to spread the faceplate of a stem to make it fit a larger bar, even if it's only 0.2mm? I had always believed it wasn't, not that I've ever broken a stem or bar.

They are generally compatible. It's not just ITM doing it.Sometimes you get the worst case of manufacturing tolerances.Too bad a fit can groove the bar or stress te faceplate. If the fit is too bad I wouldn't use it. You can help the fit by camfering the edges of the clamp. The LBS guy is a nose picker.
