How to install a derailleur cable on a mountain bike
Hi everyone,
I recently bought a Trek 4300 Mountain Bike for $50 from a moving sale, it didn't need anything really besides cables, so I decided to install them myself. I have no idea how to install them on this derailleur, I mostly deal with road bikes and this doesn't look like the ones on any of those.
The way I have the cable installed is how the old cable was installed, but the new cable keeps slipping, although I don't think that's how it is supposed to be installed. If someone could tell me how this one is installed or link me to an article with this type of derailleur?
Thanks

Shimano's pretty good about posting their tech docs online. Page 44 of the PDF linked below shows appropriate routing for a derailleur similar to yours.

On a slightly separate topic... In the first pic above, the hole at the bottom of the derailleur cage caught my eye. Are you missing a screw that fixes the outer portion of the derailleur cage to the inner plate?
