Dispatch From The "Strange Noises Department"

On my ride earlier today I found myself on a secluded country road. Other than the clicking of my rear hub freewheeling, and the wind...it was still quiet. I was coasting along down a slight decline and just kind of moving my pedals back and forth. It was then I noticed a strange noise coming from down below. It sounded like....not kidding...chickens clucking. It would happen while pedaling, or while freewheeling my pedals backward. So, later this evening I put the bike on the work stand and recreated it. It was coming from the rear hub area. But I couldn't tell if it was something in the derailleur, or the free hub. Now...I'll admit that I that I don't keep things as clean as I should back there. But I do keep it all lubed. So I took the wheel off...also took the chain off...and everything seemed to be moving very smoothly. So I cleaned the chain and cassette in the sonic cleaner, cleaned the derailleur, and reassembled everything. The chicken clucking is gone. Mysterious.

Want brand of hub/wheel is it. Normally I would say it's your freehub but that's unlikely if you can hear the noise while pedalling so that leaves wheel bearings depending on what type that are they will need to be replaced or cleaned and repacked with grease not a difficult job if they are cup and cone, cartridge types are sometimes a little fiddly to belt out. I guess another source of the noise could be something stuck in the drive chain have a close look you may have run over a chook and she's jammed in there somewhere

Yes.. squirt some light lube at the derailleur pulley wheels while turning the pedals, they can produce clucking type noises
