Fit regular rims in road bike...

Hi guys!

I am trouble fitting regular 28 inch wheels in my Giant road bike frame.
The tires are rubbing against the brake mechanism....

Can i put some kind of low profile tires on them or do I have to buy dedicated road bike wheels?

Mine are not MTB or anything - just some tour bike like wheels ... will look up the sizes when I get home ..

First, I strongly suspect you're misreading the tire size. For a road bike, you likely have a 700Cx28, or 28x622, tire. That's roughly 28 mm wide.

Some road bikes have very tight tolerances. Take your bike down to your local bike shop (LBS) and see if a 700Cx25 tire will fit, or perhaps even a 23 or 21.

@pdlamb in parts of Europe, a "700c" tire/wheel is called a 28 inch tire/wheel.
@imantsng I suspect that the wheel is not issue, just that the tire is too big. Many road bikes will barely fit a 28-622 tire. Hybrid bikes often have 38-622 tires, which are 10mm wider and 20mm larger in diameter. Please look on the tire side wall for xx-622 and let us know what the xx is.

@pdlamb - indeed in Europe it is 28 inch aka 700c

It says 32-622 (28x15/8x11/4 700x32C)
I am not sure about the rim inner width - i guess the only way is to take out the tire and measure ...

I wouldn't expect to fit a 32mm tire into a road bike.
28mm often is too big.
Get a skinnier tire.

"32-622" is ETRTO tire size designation, and the least ambiguous of the several you provided. The second number "622" represents the bead seat diameter and is the most important number; if it doesn't match your rim, the tire won't work. The first number is the nominal width of the tire, but rims can accept a range of widths. Is this 32-622 tire the one giving you clearance problems? If so, try a narrower tire, i.e. 28-622 or even 25-622 or 23-622.

Race sew ups , glued on tires, are called 28" but they're more like a 700c wire bead 23.~25.

you have selected a rim wheel combination that is too big, like wider tires? ride the touring/cross bike.

So they use inches in Europe and mm in the USA?

I have seen 28" as meaning not 27" (which is actually larger), and smaller than 29", but the 700c, 28" and 29" do all fit on the 700c (ISO 622) rims.

If the rims are fitting between the brakes and stays, then they aren't the problem. The rim width will affect the profile of the tire casing slightly, but I suspect that isn't the problem.

If the 32mm tires are close, then I would imagine that 28mm tires should fit (with very little clearance). Note, not all brands are identical. Can you get a source of tires to try that you could take back if they're too big? What tire size was stock on your bike?

25mm tires should also fit, but might be awkward if the rim is wider than 25mm.

Yes @JohnDThompson - 32-622 is the one with clearence probs.
I read that if my rims outter width is 23mm - it should be at least 17c ETRTO..
So I should be safe trying say ... 25 - I guess...
@CliffordK ... i bought an old Giant frameset ... so no stock tires .. and yes, the rims seem to fit between brakes and stays
I just took my standart 700c wheels that had 32-622 from my old bike project, hoping they would fit

Tha major problem is that the tire rubs against the rear brake mount point...

Check the Rolling Resistance review site. The reviewer often mentions the differences between nominal and actual measured sizes for tires. You might find a set that are nominally correct for your bike but run slightly larger yet still fit; or nominally too large for your bike yet actually run a bit smaller and may fit.

I'm consider that site's reviews for my own road bike. It wears 700x23 on rims originally fitted with 700x18 tires when new. Nominally it won't fit 700x28, but there are a few 700x25 tires that reportedly run slightly larger and may fit. I'd like to go slightly larger to ease the ride on our rough chip seal roads.

Ditto - I have some tube boxes that list the size tires they can be used for and 700c = 28"

Thanks!

You guys are all right - it's the tire.
I got a used 23 from a mate and - sure enough - it fits.
And 25 would fit too ...
I would like to fit 28, but that looks a bit risky ... considering I might end up putting mudguards on that bike too...
