Changing from Ultegra 6500 to Sram Red22

Hi all!

I have an old (2003ish) Ciocc v107 frame I just love, and want to make the switch from my Ultegra 6500 9spd to an 11 spd drivetrain (SRAM Red22) I picked up for really cheap.

I'm really new to changing bottom brackets/cranks. What tools specifically would I need to pull the Ultegra cranks and bottom bracket, and then install the SRAM Red22 BB and cranks? I'm pretty competent and can beg/borrow/buy most bike tools cheap from my job.

Thanks in advance!

-Alex

A crank removal tool is needed followed by a standard shimano cartridge style install/removal tool this will remove the old octalink bb, regarding the SRAM group I'm assuming you have a crank that is not specific to a bb30 and is an outboard bearing type gpx, there are plenty of online tutorials on removal an install of this (and every other)groupset so that should be your starting point. Things to consider... do you have a 11speed compatible rear wheel, if the new crankset is for a bb30 style then there is no work around if the current bb is a catridge style. I'm not that familiar with sram so others may pipe in with better advice

The SRAM RED 22 crank needs to be GXP (and not BB30/PF30), and you need a SRAM GXP bottom bracket (threaded cups)

If your frame's bottom bracket is italian threaded (instead of english threaded). You'll need a italian threaded SRAM GXP bottom bracket.

To install those cups you need a 'Shimano/Sram' type BB tool similar to this

Thanks for the help, and the leads on starting this project!

I am most wondering if there is a way to convert my existing bottom bracket/cranks (italian ultegra 6500) to SRAM Red Exogram BB30 11sp cranks. Description I can find of these cranks says "GXP/BB86-GXP adapter cupsets sold separately (see listings in Truvativ)", which leads me to believe that I can adapt my BB30 cranks to my old ultegra cartridge with the right bottom bracket setup. Here I get lost in the details/over my head online...I do have an 11 speed compatible wheel for this new setup. I've figured out pretty much everything except for this bottom bracket/crank business.

"The SRAM RED 22 crank needs to be GXP (and not BB30/PF30), and you need a SRAM GXP bottom bracket (threaded cups)" - Adapter cupset from Truvativ might solve this? I have the cranks in possession already(came as part of a package), but can sell them without losing what I invested for something that will work better if need be.

No they wont, those truvativ adaptor cups are for BB86 pressfit frames, to fit gxp cranks. They are not related to BB30.

a BB30 crank will not fit in a traditional threaded shell because the BB30 spindle is too fat (30mm vs 22/24mm for gxp) and is too short. In a BB30 system, the BB30 bearings sit inside the shell (which is much wider than a threaded shell) and there are no external cups.

On a threaded system, the bb cups are external, So the crank spindle needs to be long enough to both go through the shell and both cups. So BB30 spindles are simply too short.

But... There is a work around option. But it requires a different brand of crank.

This is a italian (ITA) to BB30 bottom bracket which is made by Rotor. It is designed for certain Rotor BB30 cranks, but they say it's also compatible with FSA BB386 cranks. Which have longer spindles than BB30.

So you have 2 options

1. Buy a Rotor or FSA BB386 crank and those adaptors above

or

2. Sell your current Red22 BB30 crank, and replace with a Sram GXP crank.

Me, I'd pick option 2, because replacement bottom brackets will be cheaper and easier to buy.

Another experimental option is a Sram Force 22 or S952 PF30 crank, which both have longer spindles compared to a Red22 crank , combined with the Rotor adaptor above.

But i cannot guarantee this will be compatible the rotor adaptor.

Sticking with the GXP option will give the least headaches.

Bikes: Too many. Giant Trance X 29, Surly Midnight Special get the most time.

Whoops, replied to your duplicate thread. Please watch that--it's annoying.

You are deeply confused about bottom brackets.

Your bottom bracket shell is a 70mm, Italian threaded shell.

The 6500 cranks are on a Octalink BB intended to be installed in an Italian shell.

Do not buy a BB30/PF30 Red crankset. Buy an Italian GXP crankset and matching bottom bracket and all will go easily. BB30 uses a 30mm spindle and is narrower than will fit your frame. You need a GXP crank, which uses a 24/22mm spindle and outboard bearings.

So did I and I agree that duplicate posts are counterproductive.
