Clunk in the bb every once in a while??

My 84 trek 460 road bike rides really nice most of the time. Every so often the peddle stroke has a clunking noise and feel, what is that - seems odd it doesnt happen on every ride?

Could there be something loose inside the bottom bracket shell? Maybe something that got in through the seat-tube? PRobably something rubbing against the exposed spindle (leaves, tree branch...). I'd overhaul the bottom bracket (always a good idea regardless of the situation).

May not be the BB; you might want to check the rest of the drivetrain as well.
