Hey everyone,
I have been looking around at some of the different chains out there.. titanium, stainless steel, etc. It looks like a nice chain for around 50 dollars weighs in at around 250 - 300g, a $300 titanium chain is about 200g, but how much does a good old $5-$10 chain from Wal-Mart weigh?

I apologize if this has been covered; I did make an attempt to search (the forum and Google) and didn't come up with anything.

About 350g... but you'd also have to add in the weight of the extra money you'd have in your pocket for not spending a ridiculous amount on chain!

Really. If saving 150g is that important, fill your water bottle only half way.

Yeah, head down to your LBS, ask for their cheapest chain, and buy it. Anything'll work, and it's stupid to spend $40 more than you have to to save 50 grams. Plus, that's $40 everytime you replace a chain...

Better yet... a good sit-down is about equal to the weight of 2 titanium chains!

That'll have to be a REALLY good one...
The average stool is around 100-150 grams.

take a poo before a ride too. The best value in any 9 speed chain is the SRAM PC69. Its about 300 grams i think and under 20 bucks

Just an FYI, I believe ALL SRAM 9spd chains except for the hollow pin models weigh exactly the same according to their boxes.

Far from disgusted . . . I'm rather intrigued here https://snipurl.com/fdgh

Figure: if you're riding a couple hundred miles a week, you're eating prolly' double the average caloric intake of a sedentary chap. Caloric intake--all things equal--has to add up to output weight, no?

Balance that with the fact that, likely, we're all also more regular than the average Sedentary Jo(an) and I think you get an equation that looks something like this:

Output = 2x average
Frequency = 1.5x average

So . . . average weight loss per--um--occurrence =

125g * 2/1.5 = 166g

YMMV

Carry on.

You crack me up!

I'm convinced the weight thing (for bikes) has nothing to do with riding; it's to "wow" your riding buddies with how light your $9,000 bike is.

Yeah, but the "rotating mass" of the chain... a lighter chain will be easier to sprint with, not to mention climbing...
