Will current generation sora shifters work with 6500 era ultegra derailleurs

so I have a bike with a full 6500 era ultegra goupset, the shifter hoods are gummy and replacemnts are impossible to find and the shifters themselves just feel kind of loose and worn out. the bike is a 2x9 set up so I'm looking at having new sora shifters installed, I'm just trying to figure out of the current generation sora shifters will work with the older ultagra derailleurs.

3500 series will work, r3000 will not work with your current FD.

if you want to use r3000 shifters you need the r3000 FD. If you use 3500 shifters you can use your current FD

gotcha, think a new sora FD would perform better than the 15ish year old ultegra unit?

I broke a 3500 shifter on my Roubaix. Shimano warrantied the part and my LBS replaced it with a 3000 shifter. I couldn't see having an odd- ball shifter so I replace the other side with a 3000. My FD is a 3500 and works fine with no issues!

the 3500 is still a modern unit where as my old 6500 ultagra is 15ish years old at least. I think I'm gonna just go for the 3500 series shifters and be done with it for now.
