Has anyone made a 1x12 to a 2x12?
Out of total curiosity (and I have not plans to do this) has any one tried or contemplated making a 1x12 set up into a 2x12?
I don't even know if there would be benefits but I am sure it is only a matter of time before someone trys
curious minds want to know

The main limitation is lack of derailleur capacity. Derailluer would only have ~40t worth of take-up, so if you install a front with a 16t difference.
SRAM GX Eagle 10-50t: 10t, 12t, 14t, 16t, 18t, 21t, 24t, 28t, 32t, 36t, 42t, 50t
front 50t- 50t not usable (chainline)
front 34t- usable 28t,32t,36t,42t,50t
Compared with a single 42t you gain one gear down and one up, and over half the cassette is un-usuable while in the smallest cog, so there's going to be a lot of front shifting.

But you might be able to go with a 40/30 and never shift into the 40-50 combination since the chain would need to be too short to accommodate a big-big without ripping off the rear derailleur. The chain length (wrap) would have to accommodate the 30t and let the useable combinations on the 40t be limited.
As for your 50/34, I don't think there are too many people pushing a 50-10.
