Intermittant ticking noise while peddling
Just bought a new Trek 7500FX on Friday and after riding it about 10 miles or so, a tick ticking noise has begun either in the bottom bracket or front derailure or somewhere in that area. Sometimes its one tick, sometimes two or three and then it stops for a couple of pedal revolutions. Then it begins again. I've now got about 30 miles on the bike and it hasn't stopped - perhaps even gotten more frequent. FWIW, when I first start out for the first mile or so, no ticks. By the end of a 10 mile ride, definitely got ticking. Also, I'm a heavy rider (225#).
It is intermittant - but I must be putting some pressure on the pedals - if I quit peddling, it stops, if I pedal with no pressure, it stops. I've tried to eliminate as many things as possible.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Changed speed - still ticks.
Changed the gears - big, middle, small chainrings plus moving through the other gears while I'm peddling and makes no difference - the noise is still there.
Have bounced the bike up and down while riding to see if it made a change - nope.
Have verified the spokes in the front and rear wheels are tight.
Have verified the magnet from the computer is not hitting anything.
The bike has disc brakes - they are not rubbing (when I'm off the bike), and I don't think if they were rubbing it would make a tick tick noise.
The pedals are on tight, the derailure is on tight, the kickstand is on tight and positioned correctly.
I plan to take it back to the LBS tomorrow, but would like to have some idea of what it might be so I can make sure they check out everything.
Anyone got any ideas of what else to check??

I have the same thing happening to my bike so when you find out what it is post it. I took my bike to a shop and the guy didn't find anything wrong with it. So now I have to wait untill I can break down the bike myself (at least 3 weeks from now).

Problem solved. Took the bike to the LBS and the manager adjusted the bottom bracket. He also adjusted several other things and I think the guy that built it was in a hurry and missed some stuff. Anyway, one of the bolts on the bottom bracket was slightly loose. Tightened it and the ticking stopped! Hooray! Feels like a NEW bike again.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions - I learned a lot and will have a better idea of how to fix things when they go wrong.

It is probably the locknuts on your tire tube valves. Those thing can be really annoying

I was gonna say, check the bolts holding the cranks to the bottom bracket.
Also, check the locknuts on your valves...those can often come slighly loose and tick...

My first thought when reading the title of this thread was "Is he selling cheap watches?"

I recently could not figure out what a noise like that was coming from recently myself, it occured out of nowhere and had no pattern to it....well, after several days, I realized what it was, I had just got some new shoes and the little shoe lace tip was hitting my water bottle cage every now and then, did I ever feel dumb! Now I just tuck it in my shoe.

I've had a case of the ticks lately myself. Now it's time to buy some more tools.

If this is a new bike with those low miles and you got it from a shop, take it back for a checkout. Pretty simple....

Perhaps it's not the noise that's intermittant (sic), it's your hearing...
