kool stop for campy ok on shimano?

hi,

i want to get kool stop pad holders for my ultegra br-6600 brakes. best price i can find is $17, plus shipping.

however, nashbar has these campy adaptors for cheap, and there is a coupon code that will lower the price even more.

can i use these campy holders?

thanks,
a

I'm curious as to why you want the holders. Why not simply get just the cartridges and use your existing holders? I think the Kool-Stop Dura-Type cartridges will fit. They did for the pad holders on my BR-7700.

The cartridges he has. But nashbar is selling TWO sets of campy koolstops for 10 bucks, so it's a good price but he wants to know if the campy pads will fit into the ultegra/DA shoes.

ok, how about this...
will the campy style *holders* fit on shimano calipers?
I've got Tiagra brakes that don't have the replaceable cartridge pads.....

I don't think so. If you want to try it, all I'd say is do it on a flat road... no point on being on a downhill only to have a pad go shooting out of the holders!

You all are really complicating something that's very simple.

Yes, the Campy shoes will work on the Shimano brakes. The only difference besides the shape is the set screw on the Shimanos; I guess that's a good thing to have if you ride backwards alot. I rarely do...

I've seen that Nashbar deal as well and it is pretty good; too seats of pads & the holders for $10.

"Shooting out of the holders" indeed!

I ordered a set to try out, and they arrived the other day.

1) The brake "shoes" will not fit shimano Tiagra calipers. I'll assume they won't fit any of the others either, because the bolt is too "thick".

2) The pad inserts will also not fit, because they're taller and shaped differently. I started to whittle a pair with a razor knife, but decided against it, as they're going on the gf's bike and I don't want any mishaps with her.

I am surprised by this; I am running Campy Chorus brakes, the wife has Shimano DAs and the bolt slots are close enough that the several pad combinations I have tried have worked on both. This is why I assumed(!) they would work w/ Ultegras. Of course, I have not tried this w/ Tiagras so I cannot say in that regard.

As to the pad inserts, you are correct; they are not interchangable unless one wishes to engage in radical surgery (not recommended).

You can do better than that. Get a set of brake pad holders and just buy the inserts.
If you need I have some around.

i got the brake on ebay, and it came without holders or shoes. well, it actually came with one holder and one shoe. i think the seller was a bit confused, because it was miscategorized in ebay as a mountain bike brake. the upshot is is that i got a brand new BR-6600 for $22, which i think is quite a deal.

OK, this got me curious so I stopped by my LBS today. This part has a threaded stud mounted on the brake shoe that is held onto the caliper by a sleeved nut (like a brake nut) that is indeed too thick for Shimano calipers. It's also too thick for my Chorus calipers, so I'm not sure what they are intended for but I intend to find out.

More to come...
