Hey people...

Show me what you know please... Your knowledge is great im sure

I got a nice used Specialzed M2 Metal Matrix (1998 I think) MTB and decided to replace the the crankset. My bike came with a typically worn set Sugino Css III gears and Specialized Strongarm cranks (not sure what the BB is.) I bought a set of new Shimano FC-M540-L (Coded as "Deore" on the shimano website) with Hollowtech Octalink cranks and a shimano Es-30 bottom bracket for 60$us. I commute to my University and will start to hit the occasional easy trail.

Good Replacement? Indifferent? Worse than what I had?

Hopefully it's no worry... If i made a noob mistake then so be it. One of the reasons i ask is that i saw my old crankset sell for 67 bucks used on ebay today... but im balancing that against the fact that im seeing this shimano crankset on decently high end bikes (see links below.) So essentially all things being equal, i can sell those and break even whilst still upgrading to a NEW crankset.

Thanks in advance! - Battle

I have one and I have put on 2/3rds of an XC and commuting season on it. Good unit, esp for the money. I paid the same on ebay for it. The square bb unit(old style) was a little iffy, but the Octalink type is holding up to me and I am a hill climber.
