Derailleur problem? Chain problem?

Last night when i was riding all of a sudden the chain slipped. It felt like the chain was slipping from one cog to another. However, that was not the problem. I moved up and down through the whole range of the cassette and it slipped wherever I stopped. The twelve tooth cog has some teeth broken off -- I'd never noticed that before -- but again, the slipping was just as bad no matter where the chain was.

I got off the bike and picked it up and spun the pedals by hand changing gears as i did it so the chain moved through the full range of the cassette. That didn't seem to be a problem, however, up front in the
derailleur area there was a noise and a jumping of the chain that must be the problem.

I'm sorry that i'm an idiot and do not know much about bike mechanics, but does this sound like a front derailleur problem?

Maybe i ought to mention that while it seemed worse if i pedaled with some intensity uphill, it also did it if i was riding easily on a slight decline.

Have a similar problem. Old bike just started riding again but not many miles on the chain. Riding partner this morning asked that same question and suggested it may have stretched. How do you know if it's too loose? Some test?? Mine is road bike.

just found these links on another post and they look like they will kick up the educational quotient here for us..

Add these two, for checking chain wear:

Just got back from bike shop. Got there early so I would be first in line because being July 4th weekend I knew they would be slammed. Turns out the cable to the rear derailleur was buggered up where it screws into the derailleur and was causing "auto-shifting" which felt like slipping.

Here are the definitive words on chain maintenance and when to replace a chain. This should really be a sticky due to so many chain questions.

Sheldon Brown:
https://sheldonbrown.com/chains.html

Lennard Zinn - Everything you ever wanted to know about dirty chains:
https://www.velonews.com/tech/report/...es/5610.0.html
Very good article! Suggests replacing at 1/16" stretch.

Lennard Zinn - Chain wear:
https://www.velonews.com/tech/report/...es/5457.0.html
Suggests replacing at 1,500 miles and before 1/8" stretch.

Park Tool - CC-3 Chain Checker:
https://www.parktool.com/tools/CC_3.shtml
The CC-3 is a "Go, No-Go" gauge designed to accurately indicate when a chain reaches 0.75% and 1% wear.

CC-3 here for $10:
