Retrofitting a Murray 18 sp Mtn bike

    Hello,
I have a 18 sp Murray mtn bike that I would like to modify. It has non-indexing shifting, and would like to change it to a Shimano indexing system. I would like suggestions on the type shifter and derailleurs to buy, also any pitfalls to look for.

    Thanks very much,
    LEJ

    Mostly I agree with syd.
But, growing up, I did a lot of those conversions. The main thing with those bikes is the deraileur has to have a certain type of mounting plate, since the frame lacks a standard mounting hanger. That limits your commonly available equipment unless you can locate an adapting plate. They can be had from the right source, or you can stick with a normal SIS derailleur of that level. I would just as soon do that option. The more important thing with an indexing conversion is to have the right cockpit controls. Are you looking at clicking thumb-shifts or rapid-fire?

    Hi,
I have had this bike for 10 years and it is in excellent condition, I can't see trashing it! For the amount of dirt riding I do, it is fine. I don't care if it is twist or ratchet shift. The main thing I want is a positive indexing of gears!! Once I know what things to look for, maybe I can find them on Ebay! Thanks for the helpful info!

I have a Raleigh M-30 (I think) mtn. bike with lower line Shimano indexed equipment The bike is dis-assembled at the moment. I think the stuff would be appropriate for your Murray. If you care to ride down I-91 to exit 7, you can pick over everything, including the new chain, tires and cables. I've moved and will be cleaning out the old house and won't be taking the bike with me.
I also have 2 road bikes, a cheap BMX and a bunch of spare schtuff to unload. E-mail me at wsalati@hotmail.com.

    You, Bill, are very cool.

Today, I believe my jurisdiction ends here...
