Brake Pads: When to replace?
Just out of curiosity, is there any certain mileage at which one should replace brake pads on a road bike?
I usually just do it when they begin to look worn as I do my check before I go out, but mine look fine at the moment but seem to a bit hinky lately. I'm going to go get some just to be safe, but is there any consensus on this?

When they're excessively worn from use or when they're excessively hard from age.

i don't know that i've seen brake pads where there wasn't either a "wear line" beyond which you risk running a metal part of the brake pads on the rims (and ruining your rims) or a metal casing on the outside of the pad that serves as its own wear line. Basically, there should be something indicating whether you're to the point of risking damage to your rims, and when you get there you should switch brake pads.

I replace my disc pads (XT) about every 1000 km or so but that's for mostly off-road riding. I find they start to make a lot of noise and the lever has a lot more play when they're worn.
