Tire Damage

On my ride this morning, a rock sliced the side of my tire, about 1/4 inch long. Fortunately from reading the forums, I inserted a dollar bill and limped home. Is it wise to repair the tire with patch or should I discard?

Hmm, I believe that boots are mostly temporary. I'd replace, but others may have different opinions.

How much is your tire worth? How much is your skin worth?

This is about the largest such cut it is practical to boot. A standard tire/tube patch such as sold by Walmart for inner tube repair (about 1/16" thick and 3/4-1" square can be used as a tire boot. If there is no bulge around the cut after booting go at it. If you are worried about the tube against the patch, get a piece of tyvek 1/2" larger around than the boot and use contact cement to cover the boot, tyvek is slippery and will reduce friction enough to minimize the risk to the tube. Tyvek makes an excellent emergency boot and a couple of pieces in 1x1", 1x2" and 1.5x2.5" will boot any cut enough to allow tube inflation to 60-80" in a road bike and allow you to ride home. They weigh milligrams, cheaper and stronger by far than $1 bills. Steve

Your safety is certainly worth the price of a new tire. I run tires for racing that are $129 a piece. I had to replace one with less than 200 miles. My training tires are 47 bucks a piece. I have replaced them with damage that you describe. It is not worth taking a chance on your interface to the road. Especially if you do any high speed riding/maneuvering.
