Thule Load Bars - Uneven lengths?

I have two sets of Thule load bars, one LB50 pair and another LB40 pair. With both pairs, I'm seeing that they have uneven lengths, with one being 2 inches shorter than the other. Is this normal? If so, which one goes on the front, and which one on the back?

Normally you use two load bars of equal lengths on your car. Wider car = wider load bars. Normally it's not wise to exceed the recommended load bar length because you'll bump your head when entering and exiting the car.

I understand that, but I was wondering if there was a standard package available that has unequal lengths for the bars? I got both these bars used, and both had different lengths.

Nope, they come from Thule packaged as equal length pairs.

Personally, I'd put the shorter one up front. It doesn't really matter that they are different lengths, but with a shorter one up front you'll be less likely to bang your head in and out of the car. Of course, your passengers will have no such protection.

Feel free to ignore the advice of the guy who made his own load bars from Home Despot EMT conduit.

peace,
sam

I have the "official" base bars for my VW Passat wagon; the front is slightly shorter than the rear, to match the taper of the car's roof rack rails.
