Specialized Hard Rock 18 speed wheels

I contacted someone selling a F/R wheelset from an older (assumed) 18 spd Specialized Hard Rock. It includes the wheels, tires, and cogs. The person claims to know little about bikes so I can't really ask detailed questions and expect accurate information. However, before I pursued this any more, I was wondering if anyone here might know:
1. Would 18 spd = 6 spd in rear?
2. Would this be a freewheel or freehub?
3. Would a wheel like this be able to be converted to 7 spd?
This would help me from wasting this person's time.
