BCD and availability of old Campy chainrings
From a bike I had custom built in the 80's... Using a Campy triple crank.
I cannot figure out the BCD... or at least it doesn't match anything on Sheldon's website.
This is a triple; outter ring is a 50 tooth, inner is 36. Current setup is 50, 46, 36. I want to go to 50, 40, 30.
So can I get new chainrings? Or must I get a whole new crankset.

TA competition is 144 BCD, as is your Nuovo Record. You can get a 50 and a 41 from Peter White, but it will cost you.

That NR triple is pretty hard to come by. I've seen it called the holy grail of vintage cranksets. If you don't care about that, you could probably sell it on eBay for way too much money and then update to a more modern crankset that you can easily get chainrings for.

See classic & vintage responses. Outer BCD is indeed 144mm; I just learned today that the grannie uses a nonstandard 100mm BCD and came only in 36T, so you are kinda stuck there, unless you want to build a 144mm BCD triple, such as the 50-47-44 and 49-46-43 I ran for many years, using long stack bolts.
49-46-43 / 13-16-19-23-26 (skip the large-large cross and look at the smooth ratio progression of the other 14 gears!)

California Cycles said they could build a freewheel for it if I still have the old body... I do. I want that 34 back in there. That was my fully loaded hill climber...
The current 50 46 36 doesn't look too bad with 13-15-17-20-24-29-34... And it is a head turner when anyone notices that odd campy triple.
But my smallest is still a few inches too big at 27.5 (26 inch wheels) Last time I bought a new freewheel, only 13-32 was available. This is a touring bike... so load carrying is key.
Dumb thing is I am worried about the drive train when the darn bike really needs to be stripped and painted. I would also love to put the Phil Wood BB back on it... I might just do that.
Looks like something like this was used to build my original crankset:

I remember seeing those Campy triples, but that was when I was young and fast and didn't need a granny gear.
You might want to check out eBay; I see those old Campy & Campy compatible chainrings listed all the time.
I seem to remember that the smallest inner ring Campy made in 144 was a 42-T, but Stronglight offered on smaller, probably a 40.
Ah, the good old days...
(Bikes are so much better now!)

You're right about new bike technology.... I feel as though I have been in a cave when in reality my only "sin" was simply riding the same bikes for 20 years. I was drooling over a Ti bike yesterday... and it even had nice "bling" engraving... nice to see all the art has not been lost. The old days of lugged frames offered both technology and art in a bike.
