knocking/tapping from somewhere on new bike

REcently got a new mountain bike (fairly cheap at aabout $200/£150) but have noticed a tapping/knocking sound when the peddles are rotating. Most noticable when rotating forward. I cannot locate anything that is tapping on the frame like wobble cables/chain etc. Could I have crap bearings in the hub of of the peddles? I cannot feel any lateral movement in the peddle cranks when pushing them by hand.

Any ideas most welcome

Cheers

I doubt this will apply but I had a situation occur where my swingarm pivot bolt had backed out enough to be making contact with the chainring bolts.

If you can't find anything making contact and you're sure it's coming from the BB area, I would suspect a bad BB.
