I decided to stop taking my bike in to the LBS to make adjustments to my derailleurs. I wanted to learn to do it myself. I got a stand and downloaded both the parktool instructions and also the Shimano Tiagra instructions. I only needed to adjust the FD so I started from scratch with the directions. I managed to get it set reasonably well.
I am confused about the trim function. Is this available on all rings? Ie If I am on the large ring, should I be able to go to a soft click to trim and then a harder click to downshift to the middle ring. Then should I be able to repeat on the middle ring? I am able to get the shifts correct but I do not get a soft click on the large ring to trim. The only click takes it down to the middle ring. The trim function does work on the middle ring though.

The Tiagra has 3 clicks on the indexing going down from the big ring to the small. I understand that the first one going down should be the trim for when the cross gearing is causing some rubbing. On my bike the trim comes on the
second ring. The first click brings it down to the second ring and then second small click trims it. Did I do something wrong on the setup? Then only other thing I noticed is the shifting from small ring to bigger ring has more tension on the shifter than the back derailleur shifter going in the opposite direction.
Any ideas on the trimming?

If you got the shimano documentation and the park how to,you got it all.So what is the question? I don't have tiagra shifterss, but don't think there is trim fro the big ring since with a triple and it's chainline you shouldn't be in the big cogs when in the big ring anyway. Anyway, that aspect should be in the shimano documentation. If there should be trim in the big ring and there isn't, then the hi limit screw may be too tight and or cable tension too high. Why shouldn't the front and back have different "feel"? You are dealing with different mechanisms with different springs.,

The shifting tension is not as much the problem as the trim function working or not working correctly.
