What kind of Specialized MTB do you have? I've got an older Rockhopper that I just replaced the front drivetrain on. The triple chainrings are bolted to the crankarm. To remove them, I pulled the crank and unbolted the ringset from the spider. It took less than an hour and the only tools I needed were hex keys (to remove the crank bolt and the chainring bolts) and a crank puller. good luck!
