cable changing

Hi there

I'm wondering how often cables/housing need to be changed? Is it determined by miles or months, something like that? I know there is a difference between brake and shifting cables, is there also difference in how often those should be changed?

thanks

Less often for brakes. For shift cables, when shifting goes in the toilet and adjustment doesn't fix it.

with occasional maintenance, a bit of lube on the part that goes into the housing, for instance) they tend to last a long time.
I replace more cables due to damage than anything else. My current patrol bike is about seven years old, and all I have ever replaced is brake pads. Even the tires (Continental) are still pretty decent.
