stem clamp clearances

so it's pretty confusing i'd say. road stems - 25.8 - 26.0 same stem should work for both they say.

but don't use a mountain stem with road bars.

seems to me some road stems fit better than others. some show too much of the threads of the bolts when tightened for my liking. I have a bontrager 31.8 that fits the bontrager OS bar I 've got like a glove.

so what's the deal . how the heck can I tell what's a road stem and what isn't, if one is taking about the 'standard' , traditional sizes. some of the so called road stems i've got fit the 26.0 bars not much differently than a mountain stem.

no I didn't I have an old bianchi strada that had 25.0 quill and I 've got a 26.4 cinelli on it now just for the hell of it

but those old style single bolt clamps were much more versatile and applied the pressure more evenly even if they were more work to change.

I'm more concerned with uneven pressure on these open face clamps

i mean if it's ok to use a 25.8 stem on a 26.0 bar

why not use a 25.8 bar with a 25.4 stem

the former doesn't bother anyone the latter and people freak out.

do 2 10ths of a millmeter make that much difference?

I like the way my 31.8 bontrager fits I may have to go that way on both of my bikes.

i'm going out of my way to make sure I use 26.0 bars with 26.0 stems. Im' NOT using 25.8 with 26.0 even though all the manufacturers say its' ok.
All I 'm saying is if that's ok why isn't 25.4 ok with 25.8

I dont' think either is ok. there's a picture of a bar in the new bicycling mag of a stem at a cyclocross event. looks like a 25.4 stem with 25.8 bars to me. I see much too much of the threads on the bolts as far as I'm concerned.

anyway, the safest thing to do I think is stick with one manufacturers bars and stems and not mix em , although I've found some ritcheys that are 25.8 and the newer ones are 26.0 so even that you have to be careful of.

If you care. which I do.

glad you enjoyed your laugh.
