    Spoke replacement cost...

DT Aerolites are about $2 a piece correct? I just recently got Bontrager Race X lite wheels, nice wheels, very happy with them, although they have the stainless steel DT Aerolites. I really like the look of black spokes more. I wonder how much it would cost to replace them with the black versions later on down the road. Any ball park figures, LBS would have to do it, beyond my capabilities. I could always ask the LBS but I would imagine they'd think I was insane since I bought the wheels a month ago.

    According to AE bike:
63.99 for box of 20 black spokes
So you would have to buy 4 boxes....255.96

Then labor charge, that depends on the shop but usually its 30-50 dollars for labor.

So probably excess of 300 dollars....all for black spokes?

300??? Spraypaint anyone? Seriously though, 300 is a huge amount for black spokes in my book. But if you got cash to burn, and really want the black... then noir it up!

I hear ya. I was just wondering. Like I said, it is purely just a consideration. I think I'd only have to buy 3 boxes, 20 in front, 24 in back. I'm happy with the wheels, I've just been riding black spokes for years and this is my first set of silvers, the bike is yellow and black so the black spokes always looked cool with it. The odd thing is that on DT Swiss's website it says the aerolites only come in black. And you are correct, black spokes don't make you go faster, but these new wheels sure do.

Personally, I think that taking pride in your ride is part of the enjoyment of cycling. All black and yellow is pretty sweet. My bike used to be all black until I started messing with its components. Now it's all black and silver, still pretty sharp in my book. I can't really fault you for wanting to coordinate because I've passed up components in the past because of their colour.

Spray painting them sounds like quite a task, to tape up the hubs and rim, and the nipples. Also, it would probably add a bit of weight, and possibly a wobble if too much was applied to one spoke. I guess I'll reserve the swap to if I break a spoke, but I've never done that yet, knock on wood.

I actually have no idea how well spraypaint would work. I've seen spraypaint on everything from airplanes to computers, so who knows...
