frame saver or just wd40.
supposedly, this frame I just got was sprayed with frame saver. however, it's been about a week and it's still wet in the bottom bracket and it smells suspiciously like wd40. does anyone have experience with frame saver? is this to be expected?

WD-40 is a fair-to-middlin' rust preventer, but certainly not heavy duty. If you live in a very wet area, or one with a lot of temperature/humidity extremes, I'd go with the frame saver.
I just restored an '83 steel-framed roadster that had been left outside on a bike rack for at least a year. I found a very small amount of rust in the bottom of the BB shell, but otherwise it was quite clean inside. With reasonable TLC, frames should last a long time.

FrameSaver does not smell like WD-40 at all. FrameSaver is tacky when it dries. It also is ruddy brown in color when dried. It smells kinda like varnish (actualy smells kinda good, but so does WD-40) +insert smiley face with bloodshot eyes and smile on face+.

spray-on fish oil is pretty good, too, but it takes about 3 days to dry, and another 5 days to stop smelling like fish.
It's provides a tacky, wax-like coating. It's almost impossible to cover the whole inside of the frame, but the most rust-prone areas (bottom bracket/seat-tube area) are easy to do.
can you undo the cable retainer under the bottom bracket to see if water starts dripping out.

when I first looked at it a week ago, it had really thick earwax looking stuff coming out of the little drill holes (for welding air-release/painting hook). it wasn't viscuous, more like tacky, so it could be framesaver though the smell is much like wd40. maybe there is more than one kind of framesaver? dunno, kill thread — at least I can visually identify it as framesaver.
