Bent Deraileur Hanger

Is there anything that can be done with a bent (non replacable) deraileur hanger, or is it time to get a new frame at that point? I know I can bend it back, I just don't know if it will stay there. This isn't my bike, and my friend (who's buying it from me) can probably deal with it the way it is, but if there was something I could use to reinforce it or something, that would be great.

Depends on the dropout material.Some take to bending better than others and it also depends on how bad it's bent.Don't feel like guessing or making assumptions.Shiffting typically goes in the toilet if they are bent.Is this guy really your friend?

mmm... it's an older GT agressor, i'm guessing it's aluminum, but i'm not sure.

Most of todays frames with a non replaceable hanger can be manipulated to a point. You need a der. hanger alignment tool to get it correct. Take the thing to a LBSto get it done. It should not take that long or cost to much. Yes a GT agressor was an Alu. frame.

The hanger can be bent back but, alumninum loses a LOT of strength when it is bent. If it is bent again, (and again), at some point a removable hanger may/will have to be retro-fitted. Yes, a good shop can do it. I installed a few myself when I wrenched for one of the largest GT dealers.

There is a kit ( or used to be ) that can be ordered by a shop. The old hanger is cut away and a portion (slot in the side) of the drop out is cut away as well and the replacable hanger is bolted on. The finshed product does have similar apperance to a stock replacable unit.

As for cost- I can't recall wow much we charged, my guess would be $20 to $30 labor plus parts

The derailleur hanger typically sees very little stress from actually riding and shifting. It gets bent and stressed from impacts. You have nothing to lose in trying to have it re-aligned. The stress of riding and shifting is on the chain and cogs, not the derailleur or hanger.
