    campy shifters/shimano derailleur

So my old campy rear derailleur gave up the ghost and I need a new one. My price range is around <$60 but the mechanic at the shop says that because I have Campy shifters (down tube on a Vitus 979 frame) Shimano won't work and I have to shell out $100+ for a Campy derailleur, or change the shifters to Shimano. Does this sound right?

    Greatly appreciate any insight!

Are they indexed shifters or friction? If indexed, how many speeds? There are quite a few variables in drivetrain components and you need to match them all up.

You can often find older derailleurs on eBay at good prices, depending of course on the model. Your shop probably wants to sell you a new one. No harm in that, but not the most cost-effective solution.
One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach -- all the damn vampires.
