    Which Crank Puller for Shimano 600?

    Guess that says it..

    I have a '99 Shimano 600 system that I've converted from 8 to 9 speed. They recommend changing the inner chain ring, but I don't have the tool to pull the cranks. Which tool is needed? Is this "Octalink" (whatever that is)?

    One quick way to tell is remove a bolt holding the crank to the bottom bracket and look at the end of the bottom bracket spindle.

    If it is square - it's a square taper

    If it's circular - it's a splined style interface or Octalink.

    Park sells 3 different bottom bracket tools: http://www.parktool.com/tool_indexes...ex_crank.shtml

    a. only square taper "ccp-2"
    b. only Octalink "ccp-4"
    c. fits both square taper or Octalink "cwp-6"

    I would not waste my time changing that ring. FWIW, there was no 600 8 speed in '99 ,and 8 speed 600 used a square taper spindle.

    Interesting. I bought the bike used in '02, but am pretty sure it's a '99. It was definitely 8 speed, everything marked "Shimano 600" with the blue & green stripe. The cranks and brakes still are 600, but I changed the shifters, cassette and rear derailleur already over to 9 speed Ultegra.

    I took off the cap over the bolt and it is a square taper, but I didn't know which crank puller was the one to use. As for changing out that chain ring, I don't believe I need to, but my wife was conned into buying it for me (she bought me all the parts to do the 8 to 9 speed upgrade last Christmas) so I'm more thinking "may as well use it as leave it lying on the bench".

    It's pre-'98 if it's 8-speed.

    Check out the Park site for descriptions and pictures.

    The "CCP-2" only fits square taper and comes with a handle to operate the remover.

    The "CWP-6" fits both square and Octalink/ISIS splined spindles. This tool does not have an integrated handle, and you'll need a wrench to operate it. This one is the more versatile tool.

    Of course, you can find other brands of crank removers, like Pedros and Lifu. For the home mechanic, any of these are adequte.

    I agree. I run 9-speed with a Dura-ace 7410 "8-speed" crankset.

    You also don't absolutely need to pull the crank to change the inner ring. You can get the rings off while the crank is on the bike (except for the granny of a triple).
