Do 8 & 9 speeds shift better than 10s?

I just got a (used) 10 speed rear cog bike with brifters. When I stomp, it tries to shift. Yes, I know that this has been discussed a million times, but so far as I can tell the cable tension is NOT out of adjustment, the derailleur is not bent, the derailleur's chainwheels are in line with the cogs of the cassette, there are no chainline problems, and the brifters are the correct models for the drivetrain.

Index shifting "pickiness" seems to me to increase with the number of cogs on the rear cassette. Is this just my perception, or do 8 speed systems shift more reliably than 9 speeds which shift more reliably than 10 speeds?

Assuming this perception **is** correct, and further assuming that I can make the change for minimal $$$, is it worth my while to "reverse upgrade" to an 8 speed? Enquiring minds want to know... :D

Obviously, 8 speed with 4.8mm cog spacing has more tolerance for slop or slight misadjustment than 3.95. Used throws another variable into the mix.

Maybe the cogs are just worn on the Cassette...

Both my 10 speed and my 8 speed equipment will be equally used. If you were in my shoes, would you switch back to 8? Thanks.

Maybe it's not just the equipement?? Sydney has 7 thru 10 speed stuff. No issues with the 9 and 10, and ain't about to go back. Send me that 10 speed crap and It will get properly processed.

Thanks, sydney! You just talked yourself out of a chance at some 10-speed stuff :( I'll adjust until I get it right - it probably isn't just the equipment  The only way I'll get better is to do it until I can. Thanks again for your patience.
