Campagnolo 718 Crown Race Mill - spring question

Campagnolo 718 Crown Race Mill - spring question
Milling my first crown for headset install. Steerer tube is not cut down but is too short to get the spring on it when I mount the mill and the holder. Can’t compress spring anywhere near enough to mount the cutter holder.
Any tips appreciated. Thought there might be multiple spring lengths but don’t see any length but one. Thx

Flip the nut over.

I just use my body weight and keep my pressure and turning as even as I can. If flipping the nut still doesn't allow the nut to "catch" the steerer threads get a 3/8" all thread rod long enough to go all the way through the steerer, a few nuts and fender washers. Use the bolt as a draw bolt acting on the free/top end of the spring with the washers under the nuts at both ends. Andy
I'll add that the Campy springs are fairly "strong". There's a very good chance that a local hardware store or DYI might have a suitably sized spring of a lighter "weight"

I use a Park Tool seat milling tool and it has no spring, but rather a piloting sleeve that can be compressed for a snug fit on the steer tube to keep it aligned.
If your tool fits fairly snug on the tube and you keep even pressure on the handles it should work fine.
Edit. I see you resolved it. I think any tools designed since the advent of threadless steerers will have no spring

I also have a Park CRC-1 (for 1.125" steerers, my old Campy can't be adapted) and I use an aftermarket spring with a shaft collar as the spring's pressure "nut". Andy
