Newbie Tire Question

My bike came with 26 x 2.00 tires. How do you know what size tires your wheel will accommodate? How much smaller can I go?

The range of suitable widths depends on how wide your rims are.
Most rims can take narrower tyres down to about 26x1.5 which is an effective size for a commuting slick.
