Disassembling Shimano 600 Aero Pedals

I have my Shimano 600 Aero pedals (mid 1980s) off the bike, but can't yet figure out how to disassemble them to clean the bearings etc. Rather than hack at it and possible damage them, I hope someone has THE answer.

The bearing assembly has a 5mm hex on the inside, 6mm on the outside, and the (30+ mm) main pedal nut. On the inside, I can see the threads on the main piece of the pedal.

I'm just unsure what one or two things I need to turn what way to loosen it.

I have or can get any tool and I have a bench vice with protective pads.
