Check that the cable is attached to the front mech, and that the cable has not snapped.

the cable might have slipped or loosened... were you clamping down your bike on a stand at the tube? i've done that, not understanding why i couldn't shift....

Are you able to move the shifter? If so, when you move it, does the cable tighten and slacken. If the shifter moves and the cable tightens and slackens appropriately the derailleur mechanism may just need to be cleaned an lubricated. Disconnect the cable and see if you can move the cable with your hands.

If the shifter moves but there doesn't seem to be any effect on the cable there may be a problem with the shifter.

If they bike is new let the bike shop check it.

If you don't know how to do any of the above you need to get a book. Derailleur adjustment is something you really need do learn how to do correctly. There have been numerous threads on book suggestions.

Grab the der. cage by hand and see if it moves. then activate the shifter. Does the cable slack lessen? if so then disconnect the cable and pull out the slack, then reconnect and tighten. If this does not fix it then replace the cable and housing. Also make sure that the limit screws are adjusted properly. If none of this works, it may be the shifter. Go to your LBS if this is the case and get them to look at it. Cleaning and lubing is a part of general maintenace and should not be ignored.
