Replace chain, gears, both? Old question.

Shifts on the rear cogset are getting jumpy. Largest two gears are OK, smallest two are OK, but two or three gears in the middle jump around when I shift. I think I remember this is usually gears or gears plus chain, not just chain, right? I don't understand since the set has less than 2,000 miles on it.

A chain can be trashed in 2000 mi. Trashed chain trashes cogs. Measure chain for wear as per Sheldon Brown at www.hariscyclery.com You might also have a RD cable tension issue.

My first guess would be tension. Have you tried adjusting it? As I understand it, a worn chain will *skip* cogs in a given gear, but if it needs tension, it would jump back and forth between two different gears.

To second Sydney's comment, I just discovered to my surprise yesterday that my chain was "on the edge" after only about 2,500 miles.
