Help establish wheel compatability

I am looking at some used wheels locally, and they have the following description of the Phil Wood hubs:

"Rear has a Sachs Freewheel that is 8 speed and can be used for both Shimano and Campy. Currently, the cogset is Campy. With the Campy setup, it is backward compatible for a 9 speed, not sure about 10."

a later email describes these as

"they are compatible with
anything pre 10 speed. They are currently Campy, but
a new cogset makes them compatible with Shimano."

Can i simply slap a 9 speed HG cassette onto this and go? Or will I need a special adapter? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

John

Short answer: No, you can't.

Details: The hub you reference is of the type that only accepts the old style threaded freewheels. It is not a cassette hub, and won't take a cassette. This is apparent in the part of the discription that goes "Rear has a Sachs Freewheel that is 8 speed..." I don't believe 9s freewheels were ever manufactured. Even 8s weren't exactly common. The OLD (over locknut dimension) may be smaller than the current 130mm road bike standard, as well.

As mentioned, it's a freewheel hub and won't take a cassette. The seller has been smoking too much carpet. The sachs 8 speed freewheel had campy 8 speed cog spacing of 5.0mm,and that is a long way from any 9 or 10 speed spacing. The other freewheel choices would be 7 or 8 speed shimano cog spacing.
