Are Ferrules Necessary for Rear V-Brake Install?
Hi
I am instaling a rear Tektro v-brake with Shimao Deore LX levers on my Cannondale mtb.
I do not have any ferrules for the top tube braze ons/cable guides where the cable runs, and they are too big to
secure the housing on their own.
Most setups start with some housing going from the lever to the first braze on then it goes to staright cable then I think some more housing goes from the second braze on down to the v-brake noodle.
Will it work ok if I just let the housing go all the way from the brake lever to the v-brake, and use a few zipties to hold the housing down? The top tube braze ons do no have a built in "stop" where the hole is smaller on one end like my deraileur cable braze ons for on the down tube. Also if my housing that came with the levers is nit ling enough do I have to have housing go into the v-brake noodle or can straight cable go up to the noodle?
Also what type of ferrules would I need for the braze ons with no "stop: thing built in. It seems like they would just slide through.
Any help is appreciated
Thank you

It will work although the housing will compress a bit more and may prevent you from getting full braking force. However V-brakes have plenty of stopping power so it may not matter.
Try it and see. If your housing is not long enough, ask an LBS to cut you off a length of housing.

You always have to have a piece of cable housing that runs into the noodle. That's what pushes the brake closed on that side.
It sounds to me like your frame is designed for a long continuous length of cable housing that runs from the brake lever and through the cable guides on the top tube to the rear noodle. That's one way that it's commonly done.
