    Old Rear Wheels

I have an old rear wheel that needs to be replace. It has a 6 gear cassette on it. When I am looking for a replacement do I get a 7 speed wheel and put the old cassette on it or do I get a new wheel and a new cassette? Thanks.

No problem if it's a 6 speed hyperglide cassette, which is unlikely. If it's 6 speed uniglide cassette then yes, you could stick a 7 speed uniglide cassette on ,but they are out of print. You could also get an 8/9 hyperglide wheel/hub and usea 4.5mm spaacer and 7 speed HG cassette, but the 8/9 hub would require spreading the rear triangle in most cases. If you have a 6 speed freewheel, then a new wheel with freewheel hub would allow use of a 7 speed freewheel.....Given the information, you have asked a question with too many possible answers.

Are you sure it's a cassette? Cassette Freehubs were very uncommon in the 6-speed era, didn't really catch on 'til the late '80s when 7-speeds became the norm. If it's a 6-speed, it is almost certainly an old-style thread-on freewheel system.

Lots of folks are confused about this, so I've made a special Web section showing how to tell the difference between the two systems: http://sheldonbrown.com/free-k7

If it is a cassette Freehub, it will be the Uniglide style (there never were any 6-speed Hyperglide Freehubs) where the smallest sprocket was threaded and acted as a lockring for the other 5 sprockets. You can't get Uniglide cassettes anymore, but most Uniglide Freehubs can be updated to 7- or more speeds Hyperglide by replacing the Freehub body. See: http://sheldonbrown.com/k7

If it's a thread-on freewheel setup, you can generally interchange 6- and 7-speed freewheels on the same hubs. See: http://sheldonbrown.com/freewheels

Sorry I used that term too loosely. It is actually a freewheel. Thanks

I would just go ahead and get a new freewheel since your building a new wheel anyway. Shimano makes a good 7 speed freewheel that cost about $25.
