Hey gang..newbie here...I have a new specialized crossroads and I notice that the crank is really squeaky..It works great, nice and smooth but it squeaks a little bit...I weigh 210 lbs although I don't know if that would matter...Does this indicate a problem?? Thanks in advance for any advice.
Your weight shouldn't really matter although it will exaggerate an existing problem. There are three likely sources of the squeak:
1. The crank arms aren't tight enough on the bottom bracket axle. This must be remedied right away or the crank will be ruined if it gets any looser. The installation torque is about 300 inch-pounds which is much tighter than you would ecpect if you've never worked on cranks before.
2. The bottom bracket itself is either not tight enough in the frame or the threads weren't lubricated sufficiently when it was installed. Again, the proper installation torque is surprising high.
3. The pedals aren't tight enough in the crank arms. The pedal threads should be lubricated and installed fairly tight.
Hi Hillrider, thanks for the reply. I have to take it in and have the shop check her out..thanks for the reply.
