Index Barends not Indexing properly

Howdy Folks,

I have a nice 'nuff 24 speed Trek 520 with bar end shifters.
The index function on the rear was working just fine until I took it off last time to redo a broke brake handle.
I put it back on, now the index "skips" gears. The top & bottom of it seem to be just fine, but it works as a friction shifter for a few of the middle ones.

When I put it into friction mode it works just fine of course, so I ain't dying, but it bugs me, & I did like the indexing silly though that may seem.

I really don't want to upgrade it to a 9 since everything else is in great shape, so no need to go down that road, but any positive suggestions would be appreciated.

Any ideas?? is this thing toast???

Thanks bunches

You probably put it back together wrong. The middle chromed ring is indexed to the adapter pod and the shift lever has to mate properly with the chromed ring also.

Well, "top" and "bottom" are located by the rear derailleur travel stops so I'm not surprised they work. However, did you readjust the cable tension when you reinstalled the shifter?

Sydney may be correct that you assembled the shifter incorrectly but there are other possible explanations for your symptoms too.

I think I have it right, it's notched so it only fits one way, as far as I can tell, & the other side is square, & only one orientation seems to work. I don't rule out stupidity but I think I got that part right unless there's a third factor I'm missing.

They really complicated but if a mistake can be made it will be made. I had a similar situation with my old bike. I did what Sydney said and just put it together too fast and it didn't work. Fixed it though. I am sure you'll get it correct with a little persistance.
