pinging noise from hub/cassette???
does anyone know what would cause an occasional ping back near the hub/cassette? its like if you've been coasting and you start pedaling again but it happens all the D@MN time. Sometimes I figure maybe Im just not pedaling fast enough but other times it just happens out of nowhere.
Its a new bike - less than 100 miles on it. Wheels say they're Easton Circuits and the hubs say Velomax.
Also, my girlfriend was riding my bike last week and I saw something pop off the bike. I stopped and it was a ring from the cranks. It doesnt look like this ring does much but it kinda goes around the hex bolt. The cranks are FSA team issue carbon pro. I just screwed the thing back on. Is this something I should be worried about? Again, it doesnt look like this thing does much but things shouldnt be popping off a brand new bike.

I'm probably wrong, but check to see if your crank is rounded (if it has a square taper). This is what happened to me using a rounded crank on a square taper BB once.

Sounds like the nipples are seating on the rim. This is not unusual for new wheels (or old ones) for that matter. You have good wheels, so do not sweat it. After about 300-400 miles, have the wheels checked if you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself. They will tighten a few spokes and get the wheel quiet again. I am guessing your cranks are ISIS or Octalink.

Well its a stock Fuji Professional so I dont think they'd put parts together that dont belong. I'd feel silly askin' the bike shop if they didnt put the right parts together. As for the nipples... its not the wheel so much as the hub. It sounds and feels like when you coast and then pedal again... the moment it acutally goes from coasting to actually pushing, there's a sound like the it actually engaged or something. Well that sound kinda happens out of nowhere and it feels like it slips for a split second.
This is really hard to describe. If you've got the bike upside down, spin the cranks and stop... then spin again, there's like a half an inch before something engages. Thats the sound. It just happens out of nowhere though while Im pedaling away no matter how smoothly Im applying pressure. This only happens while Im riding and not when I have the bike flipped.

I know what you mean, it's actually a shifter cable tension issue. The rear der. isn't 100% aligned with the sprockets, causing the chain to skip.
A turn on the barrel, probably in the counter-clockwise direction, should remedy the problem. Check shifting after doing this!

Okay so it wasnt the cable. I adjusted it and went for a 40 mile ride today... it shifts just fine, no rubbing or anything. It seems like the sound is almost like the cassette slipping from the hub or something. I'll have constant pressure on it like when Im starting off in a high gear and it feels like it slips a little and catches again. Any other ideas?

Just put together a new bike from bikes direct and got instructions for adjusting derailleurs. Everything looks fine on the Fuji so its something that's not immediately visible on the outside. Does anyone know what could cause this noise and slipage? Im not sure I want to tear up the back wheel to tinker with it without knowing what im looking for.
edit: I pulled the rear wheel off, held it and turned the cassette with my hand. It looks like there's a 1-2mm slip. Anyone know how to fix this? Should I even try to do this myself or should I take it to the shop? I've got free lifetime adjustments and only bought the thing 1 month ago.
