    BB cartridge bearings

I think I need new bearings for my BB (no, I haven't cracked it open yet, but it's been through a few winters). I read somewhere that you can get replacement bearings for BBs and hubs at a bearing supply shop, and that these are not different from bike-specific ones. Much cheaper, though.

Has anyone done this? If so, do you know the specs of the bearings (both hub and BB). Ideally, I'd just bring the old bearing to the store, and they'd find me a new one, but that means I'd have to walk to the shop.

    Well, uh, I just assumed...

The bike is a specialized rockhopper, c. 2000AD, with a mix of LX and STX in the drivetrain, so I assumed the BB would be a shimano UN52, or whatever the STX equivalent would be. For all I know, it may be cup and cone, but specialized wouldn't do that to me, would they?

UN52s (a cartridge BB) are 14 bucks at Nashbar. Yank the BB and put in the correct replacement, really doubt it is cup and cone.

Yeah, it is a cartridge type, but it doesn't have replaceable cartridge bearings. Replace the whole thing. You need to know the spindle lenth,so measure it.
