Change riding position - new mountain bike stem

I'm a little too upright when I ride and want to fix this. I wanted to purchase a stem that has an angle that will get me little lower. I've never worked on this part of the bike though. I have a cheap mountain bike and the stem screws onto the bike with an allen screw from the top. Can I swap this out, or is it not possible? If possible, what do I need to know in terms of measurments? Sorry if this is a little confusing, I'm trying to learn. Thanks for your help.

Unscrew the top, and out comes the stem. In order to get a new stem, you will need to go to a shop. They will quickly and easily find the size you need. If handlebar position is something that frequently bothers you, I personaly would reccomend you get an ajustable stem. My dad has a bad back and loves his.

Nope. It kind of "fits on" to the bike. The diameter of the stem is about the same as the headset lock-nut. I'm definetly not making sense. I will try to get a picture.
