the bar-end shifter for my front der is coming out of the handlebar. looks as if my bars have cracked where the der goes in. I've got drop bars. the only writing on the shifter itself is "shimano." I run a shimano 105 front der.
how would I go about fixing this problem? any help would be greatly appreciated, as I don't have the loot to be taking my bike into a shop till payday, and I'm looking at two days of work till then. thanks heaps ahead of time.[IMG] |
You could start by replacing the cracked handlebar.

yeah, but that's kinda expensive. aside from that, what would you suggest?
|
I'd suggest replacing the cracked handlebar. If it's cracked there, it may be fatigued elsewhere too.
Handlebars aren't that expensive. Visits to intensive care are. |

You can get new bars for $20......plus about an hours worth of your time for labor..... that's cheap. |
why don't you peel back that tape and make sure it's cracked? from the picture, all i can see is that the shifter has backed out, and a line in the tape that could be a crack in the bars or just a scratch in the tape. a crack there would be somewhat unusual.

Depending on how far it's cracked, cut some off both ends of the bars.

the bar is cracked for about an inch. the tape is off on that side. you can see the camo tape on the other side.
is the crack what is making the shifter do this? If it is, then i will have to get a new handlebar. I'll just save this one for the new fixie. If it's not the crack, then how can I get the shifter back in there? |
^^^^...remove lever so you can get at the internal 6mm hex bolt and retighten. Tight is anticlockwise.

If that's a crack are you sure you didn't create it by trying to force the shifter into the bar end?
Anyway I'm in the middle of swapping bars so I took a photo of what this should look like. |
thanks.
no, i didn't crack it. when I climb hill I hang onto that bit, so I guess that's how it cracked. |
