8 speed chain work on 9 speed?

I have a 9 speed Ultegra setup and I have a 7/8 speed hyperglide chain laying around. Will it work with this or should I buy a 9 speed chain?

You need a 9-speed chain, it's narrower.

Depends on how you feel about shift quality. Al is correct, you need a 9 speed chain.
