A freewheel with a 14 or 13 gear bottom is too big for me - with a compact crankset, I really need the 11. I already have a 14, in fact!
I like the 11-34 "MegaRange" option, actually. But I have reservations. For one thing, with a compact crank's smaller chainrings up front, I'm not sure I'll need the granny gear in the back anyway. But the main problem with the MegaRange is that, at least according to the Harris Cyclery page, I need a long-cage rear derailleur (which would be pretty dorky on an Italian road bike). Although I wonder if the requirement is really true if the MegaRange freewheel is used with a compact crank (my logic being that the chain length doesn't need to be as huge with the smaller front chainring(s))
Has anyone tried the 11-34 MegaRange with a compact crank and a normal-length real derailleur?
