Plastic disc?

Well I'm doing a really deep clean of my whole drive train and I noticed something I should have noticed long ago. A plastic disc behind my casette...Can I take this off? Its just barely bigger than my biggest ring on casette

Basically it is there to protect your wheel in case your chain falls off the largest cog and into the spokes. Yes you can take it off if you wish. You can always learn more on this topic by searching the forums using "spoke protector" or "dork disc".
